Easy Wind-Speed Calculation

(Taken from page 88 of the 1996 edition of

"The Old Farmer's Almanac"

-- courtesy Mount Washington Observatory)

To gauge wind speed:

at 10 miles per hour

you can feel the wind on your face;

at 20 small branches move and dust or snow is raised;

at 30 large branches move and wires whistle;

at 40 whole trees bend.

(And, from personal experience.):

At 45 miles/hour,

you’ll be walking

at a 45-degree angle

forward lean!
